I’ve lost my Virginity – The Sisterhood of The Travelling Dress

Today is the day I lose my blog virginity.

POP!

WELCOME! LOL

I am LA Creativity, a creative who likes to explore boundaries as well as problem solve using different forms of media.

At present, I predominantly use my skills as a Photographer to create digitals and prints.

I joined an online community called the UK Black Female Photographers (UKBFTOG) in 2017. During 2019 one of the members, Tianna Williams had an idea to do group project about a “Travelling dress.”

The concept of the “Travelling Dress” has been circulating online for a while now, where a group of photographers have one dress that they then take pictures of. This concept intrigued me and in our private Facebook group we began to brainstorm, thus the birth of “The Sisterhood of The Travelling Dress”.

The search of our dress begun but we couldn’t find one that was fitting. You would think that asking 10 creative females to pick a style and colour of a dress would be a headache, it actually wasn’t.  Once we decided that we were going to have a dress made, we contacted a designer (Tendai Collections) with our preferred style and design on Ankara print material. She then returned to us with several material options and as a collective we chose the red one. YES, I wanted the Red one!

With the dress made the next step was to send it around. August 2019, the dress started its journey in Birmingham, then made its way to London from one photographer to another. This dress has covered some serious miles, spending 3 months in transit.  Each photographer had a set period of time (one week) to have the dress and send it for the next person, in order for shoots to be planned.

Most of my images are currently taken in natural light, so I wanted to do the same with this project. My aim was to go out in London and take some pictures at a few locations. The week the dress was scheduled to arrive with me, the forecast was heavy rain for the whole week, good old English weather!  I was so upset at the thought that I would have to change my concept and shared my feelings in the group. Like sisters do, they encouraged me to push through and even suggested alternatives.

My main concern was getting the dress wet, knowing that I had to pass it on to another photographer the day after my shoot.  After talking to the individual after me we came to an arrangement that would work for both, crisis averted!

Onto crisis number 2. I received the dress and was so excited about my shoot.  A few days before my scheduled shoot my models started cancelling on me, plan A was sick. The way I wanted to cry because I had visualised the whole shoot in my head already, where she was going to stand, how I wanted her to pose her etc. Now you’re probably thinking that as a photographer you should always have a plan B. Both plan B and C also cancelled.

The feeling to give up at this point was so strong.  I had two days to make this happen and I did not think that luck was on my side.

I made my last attempt to find a model late one evening and I ended up finding two. I picked locations, both with open space but nice places to run for cover in the event that it would pour down. Shot both of them on two different days at two different locations and had an absolute amazing shoot!

When working with clients you plan for the unexpected and will always find a way to achieve what the client desires. When it is your own personal project things become slightly different, so when things don’t go to plan it can be crushing.  I didn’t allow it to completely derail me and I am happy with the end result.

Special Thank you to my Models Marianna Miles and Kadifa N Chambers
